What to Expect in a Muay Thai Class
Our Muay Thai classes balance technical instruction with high-intensity conditioning. Here's what a typical class looks like:
Dynamic Warm-Up
10-15 minutes of jump rope, shadow boxing, and mobility work. This elevates your heart rate and prepares your body for striking movements.
Technique Instruction
20-25 minutes of detailed breakdown of strikes, combinations, and defensive movements. Each class builds on fundamentals while introducing new techniques.
Pad Work
20-25 minutes of partner pad holding. This is where you develop power, timing, and accuracy while getting an incredible cardio workout.
Conditioning & Bag Work
10-15 minutes of heavy bag rounds and/or conditioning circuits. Build power endurance and test your combinations on the bag.
Optional Sparring
Light technical sparring available for those who want it. Always optional, always with protective gear, always controlled. No pressure to participate.

Muay Thai, known as the "Art of Eight Limbs," is a striking martial art from Thailand that uses punches, kicks, elbows, and knees as weapons. It's considered one of the most effective stand-up fighting systems in the world and serves as the striking foundation for most professional MMA fighters. Beyond combat effectiveness, it's an incredible workout and a rich cultural practice.
Absolutely not. Muay Thai training will build your fitness. You don't need to arrive fit to start. We welcome complete beginners regardless of their current conditioning and scale intensity to match your ability. Many of our most dedicated students started significantly out of shape and are now in the best condition of their lives.
Training Muay Thai at Yorkdale Martial Arts is very safe. The vast majority of training involves hitting pads, bags, and drilling techniques, not hitting each other. Sparring is completely optional, always controlled, and always uses protective gear. We prioritize proper technique and safety over aggression. Minor bumps and bruises can happen, but serious injuries are rare.
Athletic shorts and a t-shirt are perfect for your first class. Avoid clothing with zippers or buttons. We train barefoot. Bring water and a small towel. We provide gloves for trial classes. Once you continue, you'll want your own gloves and hand wraps, and we can recommend options at all price points.
While kickboxing uses punches and kicks, Muay Thai adds elbows, knees, and clinch work, making it a more complete striking system. Muay Thai also emphasizes devastating leg kicks and the clinch (standing grappling that allows for knees and throws). It's more combat-focused while still being excellent for fitness and self-defense.
For beginners, we recommend 2-3 classes per week to allow recovery while building consistency. As your conditioning improves, many students train 4-5 times weekly. Our unlimited membership lets you attend as many classes as your schedule and body allow. Listen to your body and increase frequency gradually.
