With summer in full swing all the Yorkdale Martial Arts Guardians might be running out of things to do and entering the lazy days of summer. Of course they can always come in to our academy and participate in the Guardian program. It will be a lot of fun, they will spend a lot of energy and they will learn valuable life skills. Having said that here are some tips to help you make this an enjoyable summer.
PLAN THE DAY
Take some time at the end of the day to go over the plan for the next day. This will prepare them for what is expected for the following day, even if things don’t go as planned. It will give them some structure and expectations. If possible, try to include about an hour of physical activity (biking, swimming, BJJ etc.) each day.
DEVELOP THE RULES TOGETHER
All of us parents set the rules and boundaries for our children, which is necessary and good, but if we include them in the process they will understand the reasons. This will ultimately lead to less conflict more peace at home. Talk with them and come to an agreement on how much screen time is ok for a day/week. Get them to understand why a box of cookies or junk food everyday is bad. Then come up with activities that you will all enjoy doing together.
BE THE ROLE MODEL
We can talk to our kids until their ears fall off but leading by example is the best lesson. You are their role model and the are more likely to make the right choice if their role model does it too. So, stick to your commitments, go out there and be active, eat healthy, watch less TV, and come train at Yorkdale Martial Arts on a regular schedule.
IT’S OKAY
Finally, just realize that it’s ok to not have plans and be bored. Just spending a boring day together at home is just as valuable and memorable as a trip or a summer camp. As adults we all have amazing memories from childhood that started with us being bored. Boredom encourages imagination and creativity. So just spend time together at home and let them be bored.
We hope this has given you some ideas for the lazy days of summer. If you are out around the city or travelling with the Guardians we would love to stay in touch by posting a picture or video on our FB page. We hope you are enjoying your summer and we look forward to seeing everyone on the mats!!
Sincerely,
Yordale MAA
